Originally designed in 1924 by Bruce Rogers (1870-1957) as a titling font for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it was influenced by the Roman type of Nicolaus Jenson (1420-1480) and, in 1929, it was released as a complete typeface by the Monotype Corporation.
