John Baskerville (1706-1775), an English printer and type-founder, designed Baskerville in the mid-18th century. Having made his fortune from japanning (a form of black lacquerwork) he turned to printing and was responsible for some important developments which enabled a typeface like Baskerville with a sharp definition and thinner strokes to be reproduced.
