Avant Garde gothic was created in the late 1960s as the masthead for the short-lived but highly influential magazine, Avant Garde. Herb Lubalin, its art director, designed the masthead and its companion headline typeface. The he and Tom Carnase worked together to transform it into complete typeface (a geometric sans serif) and in 1970, ITC (International Typeface Corporation) released it for general use.
